John Suverine Monson
May 15, 1928 - June 24, 2018

Place of Birth: Alexander, ND
Residence: Williston, ND
Age: 90

John Monson, 90, of Williston ND, passed away Sunday, June 24, 2018 at his residence. Fulkerson Stevenson Funeral Home of Williston is assisting the family.

John was born on a farm in Alexander, ND on May 15, 1928, to Hans and Sena Monson – the last of 10 children.

John attended school at Timber Creek rural school, Alexander High School and two years of trade school.

Growing up, John and his siblings swam in the CCC dam, fished in the creek, skied, tobogganed and told stories while going after cows. Often they would get so involved in the stories they passed the cows without realizing and the cows would have to come home by themselves.

John joined the Navy during WWII serving in the Philippines. After, he returned home and became a tank builder during the original 1950’s oil boom. John rose quickly from crewmember to foreman and was respected for directing and motivating his men. Wanting to spend more time with family, John learned the machinist trade at the State School of Science. This 2nd career took him to Oregon and South Dakota.

John married Carol Akerberg in Bismarck on April 30, 1955; they were best friends for 63 years. He loved bowling, horseshoes and cards, taking pleasure in winning at all three. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and camping even volunteering with Carol to host at various SD campgrounds.

His parents, all nine siblings, and an infant son preceded John in death. His wife; three children, Paul, Janet and Aaron; four grandchildren, Ryan, Jenna, Maxwell and Myalyn; two great grand children, Zander and Shelby; and many nieces and nephews survive him.

John had an easy smile and a sly sense of humor. He will be fondly remembered by all his surviving family and friends – especially his best friend.

My dear sweet Uncle John. I love this picture of him! I can see that fun rascally face when he has beat us out of a win AGAIN in gin! He would look so pleased with himself! Then he would give us one of his “wise” sayings and we would laugh so much! We will miss him so very much.

Of all his brothers, Uncle John reminded me most of my dad Harvey. I remember as a child that on our trips into Willliston we would stop by to visit Uncle John and Aunt Carol. Uncle Johnny seemed so young compared to my dad, and of course he was, 18 years younger. I always loved those visits. Sending my condolences to Aunt Carol and all the family.
