Dr. Dean Roland Strinden
November 29, 1923 - September 21, 2019

Place of Birth: Litchville, ND
Residence: Williston, ND
Age: 95

Dean Roland Strinden was born November 29, 1923 to Teddy Isaac and Martha Ovidia Eidsvig Strinden and died September 21, 2019 in Williston, North Dakota at the age of 95. He grew up in Litchville, ND where his parents instilled values of faith, family and community service.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Ione and Marcelle; brothers, Keith, Osmund Alfred and Theron Strinden.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Catheleen Leona Wallgren Strinden; children: daughter, Susan (Lyle) Hall and children Nathaniel (Annie), Kirsten (John) Juhl, Selah (Ryan) Stebbins, Maren (Nathan) Nodland, Bennet and William (Andrea); son, William (Sarah) and children, Ernest (Gabriela), Edward, Emily (Evan) Flett and Daniel (Elizabeth); daughter, Carol (William) Hineman and children, Joel (Megan), Bridget (Judah) Coleman and Jared; 18 great grandchildren; brothers, Earl (Jan) and David (Ella); sisters-in-law, Cleone and Mavis Strinden and numerous nieces and nephews.

After graduation from Litchville High School, he served in the Army in World War II stationed in the Philippines and New Guinea. He entered UND Medical School after completing his undergraduate degree then transferred for the final two years graduating from the University of Colorado Medical School in 1952. While at UND he met and married his beloved wife, Catheleen Wallgren. They moved to Williston in 1954. He co-Founded Harmon Park Clinic in 1954 and served the community as a family doctor doing everything from delivering babies to trauma surgery. He reluctantly retired from active medical practice in 1993. Over his career he served as president of the ND Chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians, ND Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the ND State Medical Association and served on the State Health Council by governor appointment. He was active in the community all his life being involved with Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Lions Club, United Way, Historical James Memorial Library, Williston School Board, UND Williston Foundation, Bethel Home Trust and the Ft. Union Trading Post Restoration Project. He was the recipient of the Sioux Award in 1994. He was the chairman for the UND Foundation and UND School of Medicine Campaign for Excellence. He was grateful to live in Williston and have the opportunity to serve with his friends and neighbors.

He has been ever dedicated to his family. There were pony rides and long walks in search of agates. His words of wisdom included “life is too short to have bad days.” For the past few years he fought health issues to continue caring for his wife. He wanted nothing more than to remain in their home spending time on the porch overlooking their peaceful valley together. He read his Bible daily and lived his faith daily. He was intelligent, wise, stubborn, strong, dedicated and loved so much. He had a passion for life, learning and doing the right thing. He was fiercely proud to be a North Dakotan and would take any opportunity to teach others about his great state. He was an excellent and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather leaving a legacy of service and lessons learned and cookies for Catheleen and the grandchildren.

He would be honored if his friends and colleagues supported the charities and organizations in his beloved community.
Thank You
The family of Dean Strinden wishes to thank all the caregivers who helped him and will continue to help him take care of his dear and beautiful wife, Catheleen.

A good man. Fairly well describes of this man as I knew him. He once told me that there was never a time he lost a patient that he didn't stop by the nursery to see the just born. I hope the nursery was full the day he passed.

What a fine man and our family's doctor during my growing up years! Doc was always caring and had a quick sense of humor to put growing boys at ease.

Glad to have known him and have him as my Doc in my early years. It'll be wonderful to see him again on those Golden Streets...

Myself and Lacey , Jordan and Tucker will miss our lifelong friend Doc. When Doc spoke we listened as his words were very well thought out and he spoke with such wisdom. Jordan and Tucker kept Doc busy after hours and once he retired as they were always running across the street for Doc to fix whatever ailed them. Especially the many fish hooks he removed from their hands. He always told us that my boys were the reason he had to keep up with his medical license once retired.
The many talks we had as he shared his wisdom and I was always interested in what he thought about things. And many many more memories of Doc and Kathleen through all these years Not to mention his banana bread he would always share with us. A kind and soft spoken man - a wonderful neighbor who loved to sit and watch my horses roam his pasture as he and Kathleen sat on the porch. He would alwAys call in early spring - Penny when are the horses coming in.
A loved and respected neighbor and most of all a good friend to me and my kids Rest In Peace Doc

Doc Strinden, which is all I new to call him till I grew up, was I guess the first man I probably saw in this world as he delivered me. I remember him making house calls when I was young. I only spoke to him probably once per year but always had the utmost respect for the man. A long life well lived. He was a good man that helped many people. My condolences to the family.

My sympathies on the loss of Dr Strinden. I worked with him for many years, at Good Samaritan and Mercy Hospitals. What a kind, gentle soul. I never heard him raise his voice. He always had a calm, peaceful demeanor about him on this earth, so it's a given that he is resting peacefully in the arms of Jesus. God bless his memory, and memories are plentiful amongst so many of us and you, his family.

My deepest sympathy to Dr. Strinden’s family. His presence in our community was treasured by everyone, not just the patients he so capably served. As demanding as his busy practice was, he still made time to serve his community and his church. A wise man whose life was a lesson for all of us. God bless his memory and his loving family as you mourn the loss of one so dear.

May you Rest In Peace, Dean. I deeply cherish the time in which you invited me into your home, to help care for Catheleen. Due to my husbands job transfer, our time was cut short after one year. I admired the love you showed for your wife, and family. You were a man of many wonderful stories, and I know you will be greatly missed. I wish I could attend services this weekend, know that I send my condolences to all of your family.

Susan, Bill & Carol, I have such fond memories of your parents! In early years of course, because I spent time with Susan. My first husband, Tom, passed away and when I remarried Phil, I asked Dean's advice about having more children at my old age. LOL! Thanks to his encouragement we had Schatzi! We rode horses with the Blue Sage Riders, another connection with Dean. Catheleen and Dean were Hub Club members when Phil was the Bible Camp director. In recent times, Dean called about the draperies we had installed in the 80's. We repaired the rods, cords and hand stitched lots of fabric. There were numerous days of delightful time spent with them! We continued to visit occasionally but instead of ladders & work, we took song books, guitars and a passion for singing. I think they both enjoyed those times almost as much as we did. Catheleen sang along on most every song! So sorry we missed your dad's funeral. We were riding in a dressage horse show in Wyoming. Maybe God bless you with great memories forever! With our sympathy, C'Dale & Phil
