It Is Our Privilege And Purpose To Serve You
Kirsten Ann Bratvold
February 11, 1953 - October 11, 2019

Place of Birth: Williston, ND
Residence: Ray, ND
Age: 66

On Friday, October 11, 2019, Kirsten Bratvold, loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed away at home at the age of 66.

Kirsten was born on February 11, 1953, to Art and Annabel (Opland) Johnson. She and her four siblings spent their early years on the family farm north of Ray until her parents moved the family to town in the late 1950s. Kirsten attended elementary in Ray and graduated from Ray High School in 1971. She attended the North Dakota State School of Science to become a cruise ship chef, but plans changed. On July 28, 1973, Kirsten and Jerald (Jerry) Bratvold were married at Rainbow Valley Lutheran Church. They raised three daughters, Shannon, Angie and Lindsey surrounded by grandparents, family and friends in Ray. The family spent summers on the farm and winters in town, moving twice a year. Kirsten was very supportive of her girls and attended countless ball games, concerts and competitions throughout their school years.

Kirsten was an invaluable partner on the farm. She drove tractor and truck, hauled grain and helped in any way she could. Throughout the years, she also worked several jobs to help support the family, including working for the Ray Post Office, Medical Arts Press and Wayne Hauge, CPA. Kirsten loved learning and earned the degree of Associate in Science and Certificate of Practical Nursing from Williston State College in 2005. Upon completion of her degree, she worked for a time at the eye clinic in Williston.

Kirsten loved giving. She always rooted for the underdog. She was an avid reader and would frequently send clippings or texts of things she thought might help you, from how to soothe a sore throat to why men shouldn’t hold laptops on their laps when trying to conceive. Kirsten was an excellent cook, sharing her food with people around town and at numerous family gatherings. She enjoyed humor and was known for laughing heartily at her own jokes. She always loved being on or near the water and for the last few years could be found on her boat on Lake Sakakawea. Many special memories with her family were made over the past few summers at the boat. She loved to travel and was always excited to see new places. Kirsten loved being a grandma and her grandkids were thoroughly loved and continually spoiled. As much as she complained about him, she also dearly loved and doted on “Jerry’s dog,” Jack. She had a gift for finding the items we all needed while shopping at TJ Maxx or one of her other favorite stores. Her giving nature and compassionate spirit will be missed.

Kirsten was preceded in death by her father, Art; her mother, Annabel and her mother-in-law, Irma. She is survived by her husband, Jerry; her daughters, Shannon (Steve) Hauge of Ray, Angie (Ryan) Monson of Bismarck and Lindsey (Brett) Narloch of Bismarck, as well as her seven grandchildren: Alexis, Hailey and Brynley Hauge, Bennett and Cooper Monson, Harper and Hudson Narloch. Kirsten is also survived by her aunt, Adelaide Johnson and four siblings: Paul (Teresa) Johnson, Gail Gonzalez, Karen Fantauzza and Steven (Angela) Johnson. In addition, her sister-in-law, Shirley (Gary) Skarphol, brother-in-law, Duane (Connie) Bratvold and many dearly loved cousins, nieces and nephews also survive her.

I was heartbroken when I saw the news of Kirsten's passing. She was a classmate of mine in the LPN program, a colleague for a time at the Eye clinic and a beloved friend. Her gentle spirit, her motherly nature and calming presence made her a great nurse. A few years back my husband was coming home from Towner in a horrible spring storm and I called Kirsten to see if he could stop at her home for awhile as the roads were impassable. In typical Kirsten style, her and Jerry graciously welcomed my husband into their home. Her kindness will never be forgotten. Fly high Kirsten-you are finally home in the loving arms of our Heavenly Father. My sincerest sympathies to the entire Bratvold family.

I think of joy when I think of Kirsten. Kirsten’s expression of joy was expressed during all the christenings, confirmations, graduation celebrations, weddings, holiday gatherings, backyard cookouts, and recognition ceremonies for the Minot Aunties, and chauffeuring Adelaide. I think about how much Kirsten loved learning and attending Nursing school. During the best of times there was a glow of joy in her face, smile and I always thought she was a very pretty looking woman. I guess in the greater scheme of things my being part of the extended Johnson-Monicken-Bratvold family, I will remember Kirsten as a sister I am also losing.
To all, especially you children, husband, sisters and brothers, I regrettably express my sympathy and offer my condolences. This loss for you and the Ray community makes me feel great grief and sadness. You are in my heart.
Love you all,
Sue Kattas

One of my fondest memories is from Kristen’s sister-in-law Angee (my sister) who so admired Kristen’s parenting ideas. While picking up toys that had lost the kid’s interest, Angee declared “I’m going to do what Kristen does” and she relayed a story of Kristen picking up toys and hiding them away only to present them later. The kids were delighted and treated the toys like they were new.
Making things special was and seeing a way to make things new was always fun with Kristen. All my love to the family. I know Kristen loved you all and she will be so missed. Love, Deb Monicken

I was so surprised when I saw Kirsten's writeup in the paper ~ all the memories came flooding back of Farmers Union Camps and time spent at your house in Ray when my dad was on the NW Mutual Aid telephone board and your dad was manager. I'm sure I have more than just a few pictures in my photo albums from those days.
My prayers for peace are with your family as you go through the days ahead.

I am so sorry for your loss! I met Kirsten at the Tioga Hospital almost 37 years ago; January 13th to be exact. I was in labor with my daughter LeAnn expecting her to be the New Years Baby for 1983 and here comes Kirsten! She definitely was in labor. We were in the same room and hours before my daughter was born here comes Lindsey robbing me of having the 1st baby of the new year! Over the years we would see each other at either the grocery store or drug store and we would recount our hospital stay! My sympathy in the loss of your wife and mother and grandmother! She was a beautiful lady and I will always have that memory with her! May God be with you and comfort you at this time!
