Place of Birth: Ray, North Dakota
Residence: Ray, North Dakota
Age: 88

Janet Knox, 88, Ray, ND, passed away surrounded by her family on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at her home in Ray, ND.

Janet Barbara Knox was born June 7, 1931 to Lawrence and Eunice (LeMire) LaJoie on the family farm North of Ray. Over the years, the family moved to Ft. Peck, MT, onto South Carolina then returning back home to Ray, ND. At the age of 15, Janet started working for Elmer Tank in the grocery business.

Janet met John Knox and they married on June 1, 1950. To this union 6 children were born, Rickie, Deneille, Craig, Kimberly, Kyle and Barbara. She worked at the Telephone Company, various grocery stores and one of her most rewarding jobs was cooking at the Ray School System for over 20 years. Janet was a member of Saint Michael’s Catholic Church.

She enjoyed entertaining and baking for others. Janet loved to feed people, so anyone and everyone was welcome to stop by her home for whatever her specialty was for the day. When Janet wasn’t baking you would find her reading and writing poetry. She spent many hours planting, weeding and watering the flowers for her and others to admire and enjoy. Her family, grand children and friends were very important to her and she cherished the time she was able to spend with them.

Janet is survived by sons, Rickie (Kelly) Knox of Priest Lake, ID, Craig Knox of Ray, ND and Kyle Knox of Rifle, CO; daughters, Deneille (Noble) Soine of Ray, ND, Kimberly (Richard Gottschalk) Severson of Waseca, MN and Barbara Knox of Minot, ND; grandchildren, Crystal Knox, David Knox, Michelle (Bryon) Vassen, Brandon (Deb) Soine, Justin (Kayla) Soine, David (Brandy) Veach, Chelsey (Ben) Earles, Brandi (Johnny) Severson and Jennifer Fettig; 13 great-grandchildren; brothers, Harley LaJoie and Lawrence LaJoie; sister, Shirley Lang; aunt, Dorothy Hagan, her dearest friend and neighbor of 50 years, Mickey Donnelly.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; sister, Jeannine Kutnink; daughter-in-law, Darla Knox and grandson, Austin Knox.

We are so sorry for your loss. Janet was always so much fun to work with and visit with. We even got to see and hear some of her poems she wrote and Janet always went the extra mile cooking at the school. She will be so missed, but heaven definitely gained an angel.

I got to know Janet 14 years ago when I met her daughter, Kim. I knew right away that this momma was going to be special to me. She had such a wonderful sense of humor and was so good at playing tricks. And her stories.....so interesting how they told of her younger years and the hardships they faced in the 30's. As a World War ll buff, I really enjoyed her memories of the war years when they lived in South Carolina. Even though she was barely a teenager then, she could identify all the types of bombers and fighters that flew over their town from the nearby training airfield. But the highlight of my memories of Janet is when Kim and I drove her to South Carolina in 2015 to the very town where she lived during the war. One can't begin to explain the look of excitement and wonder on her face when she got to see her old house and neighborhood. Her house was even empty while it was being remodeled by new owners and she got to go inside. She had the look of a little child coming home again. I'll never forget it. She also got to go in her old church and sat in the same pew that her family used. And then it was on to the Atlantic Ocean and she got to walk on the beach and wade in the water. The look on her face was priceless. Back in Minnesota, I got to experience her first ever auction where she delighted in the dollar boxes. There was also her first boat ride on a paddle wheel on the Mississippi River that I got to see along with many trips to nearby thrift stores - one of her favorite activities. I'll truly miss Janet......her stories, her baking, her laughter and most of all, her spirit.
