John Allen Hellandsaas was born on August 18, 1953 in Watford City to Orville and Juliet (Swenson) Hellandsaas. He was called home on February 10, 2020 at 66 years old.
John attended school in Williston, ND and Billings, MT while his parents worked road construction for Frank Olson Construction. They moved back to the family farm north of Watford City in 1966. After graduation from WCHS, he attended the North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, ND. He completed Electronics and Parts Training Degrees. John returned to Watford City and worked various parts and oilfield jobs until he retired in 2016. He served on the Watford City, City Council for 16 years. He also served on the Watford City Fire Department for 20 years.
John was passionate about hunting and was successful with elk, deer, and bear hunting trips to Montana. He loved packing with the horses into the backcountry of the mountains with Mark, Scott, Snakebite, and Gene. John enjoyed working on the farm and completing various leather crafting and woodworking projects.
In 1980, John married Ronni Lee and this union lasted 13 years. In 1995, he married Marcia Anderson. To this union, a son, Eric was born in 1997. He enjoyed many years of watching and critiquing hockey, which Eric was involved in for a long time.
John is survived by his wife, Marcia; son Eric (Brittany Sandvik); sister Jody (Jim) Renbarger, their son Cory (Amanda), child Bella; sister-in-law Peggy Hellandsaas, daughter, Nicole Johnsrud (Justin) and children Gracie and Judd, son Derek Mott (Lacey) and children Rowdy and Brindle, daughter Kari Korslien (Rex) and children KC, Kenley and Kash, daughter Jade DeMorrett (Levi) and children Chloe, Tynlee, and Brax; father-in-law Jim Anderson; sister-in-law Kim Pachi (Randy) and their child Adam (Sara) and child Anson; sister-in-law Patsy Lisko (Russel) son Justin Lisko (Rainee) and son George, daughter Emily Lisko (Joey).
He is preceded in death by parents Orville and Juliet Hellandsaas, brother Scott Hellandsaas, nephew Jeremiah Renbarger, and mother-in-law Rosella Anderson.
