Douglas Neil Downie
March 17, 1953 - June 2, 2020

Place of Birth: Fargo, North Dakota
Residence: Stanley, North Dakota
Age: 67

Douglas N. Downie, 67, of Stanley, ND passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2020 at his residence in Stanley, ND.

Douglas Neil Downie was born on March 17th, 1953 in Fargo, North Dakota to Deloris Downie.

Doug came to Opportunity Foundation (formerly known as Tri-City Cares) in July of 1985 and has lived in Tioga, New Town and Stanley Group Homes. He did achieve a goal of living in his own apartment for almost 15 years before finally settling back into the Stanley Group Home where he resided until he passed.

Doug attended Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Parish and was a member in the Knights of Columbus Council #7687. He was very proud of his contributions selling tickets to raise money for their charitable causes and enjoyed enduring friendships with many of the Knights. In the spring of 2006, Doug was presented with a wool Knights of Columbus Jacket.

Doug served on the Human Rights Committee for Tri-City Cares as well as the Board of Directors until 2018. Since 1992, Doug made sure that he voted in every November Election.

Doug enjoyed drawing, leather work, woodworking, listening to country music, playing UNO, watching westerns, and playing his harmonica. He was always up for adventures including camping, visiting ranches, attending hockey games and other sporting events, the ND State Fair and Hostfest.

He was a kind and gentle man with a wonderful sense of humor. He touched many lives and those who knew him were richer for the experience. He will be missed.

Doug is preceded in death by his cousin, Mary and his mother, Deloris. Doug is survived by his friends Mary and John Mercer, Perham, MN and their children and grandchildren.

There will be a luncheon provided at Opportunity Foundation (15 1st St SE) after the burial. All are invited.

Wish I could be there for your big send off. I know how much you loved a good party. You will be missed by those left behind and greeted by those loved ones that went before you. Maybe you and your old apartment neighbors can rejoice and have a dance party without the physical pains and limitations you suffered here on earth. Give each of them a hug from me. Love you Doug.

Thanks for sharing our holiday celebrations over the years, Doug. We will miss you and think of you fondly each time we gather in the future, especially when we are playing UNO, looking through the Black Friday flyers to make our Christmas lists, and enjoying a beer on St. Patrick's Day.
