Elmer Eugene (Gene) Foss, 78 of Culbertson, MT, passed away April 11, 2021, at his ranch outside on the land he loved. An outside service will take place at the Lynde Cemetery on Saturday, June19th, 2021, at the same time as his wife’s, Marsha (Becker) Foss. Gene was born December, 15th, 1942, in Sidney MT. He was the youngest of 11 children & “finally” a boy after eight girls. His family lived on their ranch near Culbertson his whole life. He graduated from Sidney High School in 1960, where he was Sidney’s first All State Wrestler & played football. He attended college at MSU, in Bozeman, MT.
Gene was a true cowboy in every sense of the word. He loved his family, animals, land, friends, and neighbors. Gene wanted to share his cowboy life with the world, so he did just that, by hosting many cattle drives, with his wife, Marsha, on or near the ranch over many years. Foss Cattle Drives hosted hundreds of guests from 35 states and 10 countries from all over the world. Gene never met a stranger.
Gene has farmed and ranched full time from 1965 until the time of his passing, buying his own ranch in 1972. He was very involved in his community as a 4-H Leader, founding director of Charlie Creek Jaycees, Sidney Elks member and president, Culbertson Saddle Club director for 12 years and president, Culbertson Farmers Elevator president and chairman of the board and member of the Lions Club, Culbertson Museum, Lynde Cemetery, and Thrashers Association. Gene also owned and operated Foss Rocks with his grandson, Chase, where they hauled scoria.
The pride and joy of his life were his grandchildren, who fondly called him “Grandpa with the Mustache” Chase, Kourtney, and Jacob. He always said he was so proud of them. He and his wife Marsha, raised Chase, from Elementary School through graduation of High School.
Survived by his children, Michelle Foss, Sidney, MT, and Russell (Paula) Foss, Billings, MT. Step children Christy (Mark) Kleinwaechter, Dickinson, ND, and Billy Norby (Sharon Hodges), Culbertson, MT. Grandchildren Chase Kilzer, Kourtney Kleinwaechter (Byren Tobar), Jacob Kleinwaechter, all of Dickinson, ND. Sisters, Shirley (Boyd) Hardy, Fairview, MT, Constance (Connie) (Allen) Thompson Anchorage, AK, Norma Foss Stockton, CA, and Mary Marie Taylor Bellingham, WA. Sister in laws, Brenda (Arden) Saunders, Hettinger, ND, Pam (Kelly) Wolf, Bettendorf, IA, JoAnn Foss and Janice Becker, Richardton, ND. Many cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and pets.
Preceded in death by his adoring wife, just months ago, Marsha Foss, parents, Elmer and Dorothy Foss, siblings, infant Marjorie Jean, Winifred (Winnie) Clausen, child Peggy Hope, Kenneth Foss, Harry Foss, Mildred (Dolly) Angel, and Norman Foss.
Fulkerson Stevenson Funeral Home of Sidney, MT, is caring for the family. Remembrances, condolences and pictures can be shared at www.fulkersons.com

I grew up in MT on my parent's ranch about 10 mi from Gene's parent's ranch. We were best friends growing up, and often stayed at the other's home for a week at a time. In the last few years, we grew closer again as we entered the Autumn of our years. After his recent health problems, it hurts the way he graduated to be with Marsha. He dearly loved ranching, so I guess it might be a fitting way for his exit. God Bless and I'll miss you Gene........Steve

Branding 2009 - Gene and Jim
So incredibly sad, Gene was a deeply good person who could be counted on to help anybody with anything at any time, just the way he was. Will also miss his awesome sense of humor and love for the outdoors. Gene had a way of brightening peoples days and will be dearly missed.

A friendship remembered

Gene and I became fast friends in high school. We shared the love of sports, football and wrestling. Gene was also a track star but my dad needed help getting the spring crop in so my
time was spent helping with the farm work.
I think sharing the farm/ranch 4-H experiences found us some common ground in the beginning. But as we got older we discovered girls and decided dating was much more exciting.
We went on many double dates together and great fun was had by all.
Our college years found us apart geographically, Gene at Bozeman and I was at Billings. We still managed to share adventures and experiences. One memorable car trip was to the Rose Bowl 1961 or 62. Minn. played and Bob Jensen
got us tickets. Gene had a new car and six friends traveled to Los Angeles. :-) We turned it into a week long fun filled adventure.
After college Gene returned to family and ranching, his two main loves. I followed a career in sales and marketing in the corporate world.
We both had families and that became the center of our attention. When I heard that Gene's wife had died I reached out to him with phone calls and we spoke a few weeks ago. I was happy to talk with him and like all good friends our conversation was warm and enjoyable. We picked up right where we left off years ago. I was surprised to find out Gene had been married 34 yrs. He told me it was very hard going on without his best friend but he had family and friends supporting him. He said his biggest enjoyment was looking after his cattle. A true rancher.
We made an agreement that we would stay in touch every week or two and I would let him know if I was driving to Montana since we still have our farm at Crane and I have two sisters I haven't seen since the virus has kept everyone
home. He told me he would look forward to our visit. I guess now we will just have to wait a little bit till we meet in heaven.
We love and miss you Gene.
Your friend, Gordon

I worked with Scott Nightengale on the ranch one summer. I do remember everyone including Gene. Sad to hear about Gene but interesting to read about everyone in the family in the obituary. Hope everyone stays well. That summer was one my greatest memories. Rob
