Paul Jerome Lautenschlager
May 11, 1937 - August 9, 2023

Place of Birth: Minot, North Dakota
Residence: Stanley, North Dakota
Age: 86

Paul “Jerome” Lautenschlager, 86, of Stanley ND went to be with his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, August 9, 2023.

Jerome was born on May 11th, 1937, in Minot, North Dakota, to Paul and Dora (DeBilt) Lautenschlager. He was the youngest of four boys following his older brothers Dean, Roger, and Hank. Jerome and his brothers grew up in Larson, North Dakota, and attended school in Columbus. Even from a young age, Jerome understood the importance of hard work. At the tender age of 16, while helping a neighbor cut railroad ties with a circular saw, he suffered a life-altering accident that nearly took his life. However, Jerome's resilience and determination allowed him to achieve more with one "good hand" than many accomplished with two.

In 1958, Jerome crossed paths with the love of his life, Patricia (Frederick), at the County Fair in Flaxton ND. On July 12, 1959, in Kenmare, North Dakota, Pat and Jerome exchanged vows, embarking on a remarkable 64-year marriage. Their union welcomed the birth of three children, Steve, Scott, and Renae. Jerome was a devoted husband and father. After arriving home from work, he cherished many hours playing on the floor with his children. He enjoyed taking trips with his family each year. Jerome spent many hours driving and would turn up country gospel music and some other favorites like Roger Miller on eight-track tapes while in the boat, the camper, or just driving in a vehicle. Jerome had transformed more than one school bus into a family camper and his kids would take turns sitting in the folding chair next to him manning the eight-track player. Simply spending time with his wife and children brought him great joy. Another fond memory was taking his kids for rides in the REA bombardier. He instilled enduring values in them – humility, kindness, and a strong work ethic – traits that will forever define his life.

Jerome dedicated 16 years of his life as a lineman, ten years as a line superintendent, and another ten years as a safety instructor, providing service to his community and building many memorable relationships.

Jerome and Pat raised their family in McClusky, Wing, and Stanley. After their children graduated from Stanley High School, Jerome and Pat moved to Mandan where he finished his career as a safety instructor. They then returned to Stanley where Jerome enjoyed his so called “retirement”. He never really stopped working he just varied his jobs. In his early years as well as his retirement he truly enjoyed helping his very dear friends with farming, ranching, and in any other capacity he could lend “a hand”. Jerome also volunteered his “handy”-man services to Stanley Community Housing for more than 25 years.

The joy of Jerome's life multiplied with the arrival of 14 grandchildren, followed by 29 great-grandchildren. His love for them was unmistakable through his countless acts of selflessness. A man of few words but abundant deeds, he readily repaired bike chains, helped with car troubles, helped with school projects, and attended countless sporting events. His selflessness was unmatched. Jerome was unassuming, never seeking recognition, yet his heart was evident in his actions toward others.

As we reflect on the life of Paul "Jerome" Lautenschlager, we remember a man who overcame hardship, who loved profoundly through his actions, and who leaves behind a legacy woven with threads of service, humility, and unwavering devotion.

Survived by: His loving wife of 64 years Pat; children, Steve (Brenda) Lautenschlager, Scott (Chelly) Lautenschlager, Renae (Duc) Thiel; brother; Hank (Arene Grubb) Lautenschlager; grandchildren; Alex (Krista) Lautenschlager, Tyler (Ryan Walter) Lautenschlager, Ben Lautenschlager, Ethan (Mercedes) Lautenschlager, Madison Kjer, Charlie Kjer, Dodie (Dennis) Renner, Kacey Cope (Ryan Young), Tyler (Ashey) Thiel, Shayna (Jared) Rognlien, Jenna (Vernon) Snyder, Kyli (Drew) Drosdal, Kori (Ty) Taylor, and many well-loved great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
