Steven M. Schmidt
August 3, 1968 - April 6, 2024

Place of Birth: Fargo, North Dakota
Residence: Williston, North Dakota
Age: 55

Steven M. Schmidt, 55, of Williston, ND passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2024 at the CHI St. Alexius Hospital in Williston, ND.

Steven Michael Schmidt was born August 3, 1968 in Fargo, ND. He was adopted into the loving home of Karen and Darrell Schmidt when he was 5 weeks old. He was raised in Williston and attended special education classes in Williston Public Schools until the age of 21.

Steven enjoyed growing up in a farm family which often included rides in the combine with Darrell. He spent most weekends at the family cabin at Blacktail Dam.

Steven loved to see family gathered together over holidays and during hunting season. He especially loved those family members that shared their beer with him! Sunday afternoons were spent drinking coffee at Marlene’s and playing cards.

Steven’s parents were active supporters of The Opportunity Foundation. After Darrell passed away Steven moved into the group home. The loving and exceptional care they provided was so appreciated by his family.

One of the things that family and Opportunity Staff know about Steven was that he had a favorite color...gray and only gray. Don't even try to give him another color shirt to put on.

He was loved by many. The support others have provided to him and his family enabled Steven to have his best life ever.

Steven is survived by his mother, Karen; aunts, Marlene, Mary and Penny; and uncle, Tom. He is also survived by numerous cousins and so many loving friends.

He is preceded in death by his father, Darrell; his grandparents and several aunts and uncles.

Karen, Clif and I are so very sorry to hear of Steven’s passing. We are watching our grand daughters in Bismarck while their parents are in Idaho for surgery and heard the news last night from Loris Van Berkom. Steven was a very special guy to both of us. We loved him dearly. He always grinned and said, “Hi, Clif,” whenever he’d see Clif, but never said my name; just grinned!!
I really enjoyed having Steven in school and seeing him at the Donut Hole or other places around town.
Now he will enjoying having coffee and pie with Darrell in heaven!! Prayers of peace and comfort for you, Karen.

I want to thank my Opportunity Foundation Co-Workers for letting me know about Steven. Also for all they did for Steven. I stayed with Steven while Karen and Darrell went to Az for 6 weeks in the winters. Doug would always say, “Mavis is living with another man.”
Steven was blessed to have the best parent. He will be missed by many! RIP buddy!
