Garland passed away on May 23, 2024, at age 73 at Sanford Hospital in Bismarck, ND. He was born on December 06, 1950, in Elbowoods, ND to the late Joseph Beston Sr. and Gertrude (Mckinley) Beston. He was a member of the knife clan and child of prairie chicken. He was raised in Santee and in Mandaree, ND.

Garland lived a colorful and adventurous life. After graduating from Mandaree High School in 1972, Garland continued his studies at Bismarck State college. He went on to work for the TAT Law Enforcement, where he made many friends and left a lasting impact on his colleagues.

In Garlands earlier years he enjoyed basketball, telling stories about basketball and he was proud of his basketball skills.

One of Garlands favorite past times was playing at the casino, where he was known for his luck and strategic prowess. He could spend hours at the slot machines, always coming out ahead at the end.

Garland enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was a firm believer in his spirituality. He Sundanced for many years and was very knowledgeable in those ways. He always believed that prayer could get you through any obstacle in life. He knew many ceremony songs & he passed along a lot of teachings to those around him.

Garland was always a jokester and teasing anyone that crossed his path. Garland will be dearly missed by all who knew him, but we take comfort in knowing that he is now reunited with his loved ones in the great casino in the sky.

He is survived by his children, Gayla and Donovan; three grandchildren, Chaz Wise Spirit of Mandaree, Rylie Phelan of California, Serenity Bear of Mandaree, ND; his siblings, Darlene Fox of Bismarck, ND and Della (Joe Deane) of New Town, ND.

Garland will be greeting his many family members in the next camp including his wife, Edith; grandson, Soaring Eagle; his parents; siblings, Joyce Beston Lovan, Ardyth Beston, Quentin Beston, Harlan, Leroy and Joe Jr.
