Evelyn Halvorson, 99, of Manitou, ND, peacefully went to her Heavenly home on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at the Mountrail Bethel Home in Stanley, ND.

Evelyn Rose Halvorson was born on January 9, 1925 to Howard and Inga Butterfield in Stanley, ND. She was raised on the family farm northeast of Manitou, ND with her siblings, Cecile, Ernest, Betty, Lois, Willis, Harley, and Rhoda. Evelyn attended Manitou School for eleven years, her final year through correspondence, and while in school played basketball for the Manitou Braves. While the weather was nice Evelyn and her siblings would walk the three miles to school each day, and in the winter months their dad would take them in a horse drawn sleigh.

Evelyn met Alvin Halvorson at the Butterfield farm when he was a member of the threshing crew. On their first date they watched the movie “Gone with The Wind”. The couple attended dances together and went roller-skating at Ponchos during their courtship. The couple was married on July 18, 1942 in Sidney, MT. They lived in the stone house east of the Edward and Marie Halvorson homestead where their first two sons, Robert and Richard, were born. The family moved into White Earth, ND for a short period of time, then to a farmstead three miles northwest of Manitou where their third son, Rodney, was born. A short while later they moved to their forever home in Manitou where they would raise and complete their family with the addition of Peggy, Roger, Dennis, Alvin Jr., Kevin, David, and Karen. Alvin Jr. was the first baby born in the Stanley Community Hospital. On March 7, 1969 Evelyn lost her husband in an accident.

Evelyn worked as a CNA at the Mountrail Bethel Home for 17 years, starting in the mid 1970’s and retiring in the early 1990’s. After retirement she enjoyed traveling to visit her beloved family and grandchildren, and valued the time spent with her great and great-great grandchildren. She was a board member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Manitou, member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Ladies Aid in Ross, ND, and lived most of her life in Manitou Township. Evelyn often laughed when people joked with her being the “Mayor of Manitou”. She loved the spring of the year and watching her favorite flower, red roses, bloom and watching her favorite birds, gold finches, fly around. She enjoyed reading the Mountrail Promoter each Wednesday, and watching her favorite TV shows, The Price is Right, Wheel of Fortune, Andy Griffith, Family Feud, and high school basketball. Evelyn was a very good cook her whole life sharing Christmas time goodies was very special to her.

Evelyn is survived by her children, Robert (Sharon) Halvorson, Peggy (Norb) Weixel, Roger (Barb) Halvorson, Dennis Halvorson, Alvin Jr. (Lori) Halvorson, Kevin (Christine) Halvorson, Karen (Mike) Lee; sister, Rhoda Hickel; daughter in laws, Mary Halvorson, Diane Halvorson, Glenice Halvorson; grandchildren, Tammi (Butch) Olstad, Scott Halvorson, Chris (Ginny) Halvorson, Jeremy Halvorson, Deanna (Todd) Nelson, Andrea (Jeff) Matson, Elizabeth Weixel (Josh Anderson), Joel Weixel, Shane Halvorson, Shannon (Mallory) Halvorson, Nathan (Amanda) Emmert, Dezarae (Chris) Glaholt, Dawn (Eric) Scott, Josh (Kay) Halvorson, Sommer (Brandon) Mosser, Kimberly (Dallas) Schmidt, Justin (Leah) Halvorson, Shawn (Tonya) Halvorson, Kelly Halvorson (Eric Quigley), Angela Lee, Nikki (Darren) Messmore, Michael Lee; 49 great grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
