Elden Cyrus Long, 79, formerly of Williston, ND, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones in Hopkinsville, KY, on September 6, 2026.
Elden was born on May 28, 1947, to Cyrus and Jean (Boyce) Long in Williston, ND. As the oldest of five brothers, Elden grew up with a natural drive and an unmatched work ethic. Though a severe accident during his school years caused him to miss significant class time, it never slowed him down. He was no stranger to hard work, fondly recalling painting the Webster school in the fifth grade and helping his father build shelves for their new home.
Elden became a true jack-of-all-trades, mastering plumbing, carpentry, and woodworking. He could make or fix just about anything. In fact, there was hardly a building in Williston you could drive by without Elden pointing out a piece of work he had done on it.
Beyond his talented craftsmanship, Elden was known for his big heart and sharp wit. A professional wisecracker at heart, he always had a quick comeback ready, but was just as quick to lend a helping hand to anyone in need or treat them to supper at his favorite restaurant, Lonnie’s Cafe.
Later in life, Elden blessed the world with his children. He welcomed his son, Matthew, during his marriage to Denise, and later welcomed his daughter, Linda, and son, Keith, during his marriage to Wanda.
Elden found great joy in the simple things. He loved fishing, cruising in his truck, and tending to his plants—especially his treasured Christmas Cactus, which he always managed to keep blooming like crazy. He deeply loved his grandchildren, always delighting in spoiling them with special treats and helping them get into a little mischief. He spent his final year enjoying life in Hopkinsville, KY, where he took great joy in calling his family back in North Dakota to give them warm weather reports.
Elden was preceded in death by his parents, Cyrus and Jean Long; his brother, Milan Long; and his sister-in-law, Brenda Long.
He is survived and dearly missed by his brothers, Gerald (Joan) Long, Mark (Victoria) Long, and Dale Long; his children, Matthew Long, Linda Borror and Keith Long; his beloved grandchildren, Karsyn, Aiva, and Beau; and many cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins.
